Ref: 2163 - Victorian 1853 Cavalry Troopers Sword to the West Somerset Yeomanry.

1853 Pattern.
Array
£695.00
Description

A superb 1853 pattern cavalry trooper sword, it has a Hilt with a twisted three bar guard and a grip of chequered leather. It has a beautiful clean, curved blade with a wide fuller on both sides running down three quarters of the blade; the last quarter is double edged with a spear point. it comes in its original steel scabbard, this has light staining in places and it is also engraved near the top ‘W. S. Y. 122’ for the 122nd Yeomanry, West Somerset. A very fine sword in lovely original untouched condition, measuring 43 inches long. Interesting note. In this period, the yeomanry were used as a kind of mobile police force and in most situations proved very heavy handed, the WSY were call to the Devon bread riots of the 1860’s where the summer crops of wheat and barley failed and the poorer folk of the south west were almost starving. Violent riots erupted and the crowd had to be subdued by the Volunteer Artillery, Rifles and Yeomanry. Many serious wounds were inflicted but fierce fighting carried on regardless into the early hours of the morning and a lot of property and shops were damaged.
