***NOW SOLD***c1800 26th Light Dragoons Flintlock Pistol in Pristine, Untouched Condition.
A superb original c1800 example.
Light Dragoons flintlock pistol.
There were 34 regiments of 'fencible' cavalry that were raised in 1794 and 1795 for Home Service only in response to a feared invasion by the French. The word 'fencible' denotes a soldier who has volunteered for service in the United Kingdom and Ireland only. The original owner of the pistol would not be allowed to serve in overseas campaigns. Regiments numbered 1 to 6 were heavy cavalry whereas regiments numbered 7 to 29 were light dragoons. By the end of the French Revolutionary Wars in 1802 all regiments had been disbanded. 26 Light Dragoons was raised in 1795 and disbanded in 1802. It served in both England and Ireland in support of the civil powers on preventions of insurrections, riot control and civil unrest and was only recruited for the defence of the realm. These light dragoon regiments were never reconstituted as Hussars as this was done in only 1807, as stamped on one of my other pistols. The 'XXVI' stamped on the ramrod denotes '26th Light Dragoons'.
A very rare gun from a cavalry regiment that only existed for 7 years!
